Coders and game designers this fall as we launch three new after-school workshops, starting the first week of October. These no-cost courses introduce key concepts in programming, hardware, and software, and inspire youth participants to look at careers and educational possibilities in key STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) fields as they develop new skills they can start using immediately.
The three courses, offered in-person at the Makerspace in Iqaluit, will be:
Introduction to Video Game Design
Tuesdays, 4:00 – 5:30 pm, October 5th – December 7th
Participants aged 10-14 will learn how videogames are designed, and put this knowledge to the test as they create their own game! Using makecode arcade and a pybadge, participants will learn the tools to create their own game and be able to play it on a handheld device!
Introduction to Python
Wednesdays, 4:00 – 5:30 pm, October 6th – December 8th
This course is an introduction to the programming language Python for students aged 14-17. Python is a very versatile language used in many different programming projects and fields, such as computer science, data science, and topics as far reaching as machine learning. Some of the projects in this course include a random number generating guessing game and the card game war!
Introduction to Coding using Minecraft
Thursdays, 4:00 – 5:30 pm, October 7th – December 9th
Participants aged 12-16 will be introduced to how computers think and basic coding concepts like algorithms, sequences, loops, conditionals, and functions. Working with Minecraft Education Edition they will use block-based programming to solve challenges and unleash their creativity to build epic creations!
