Root & STEM is Seeking Contributions for Our Next Issue

September 8, 2021

Pinnguaq invites journalists, space, and moon subject experts, knowledge keepers, and artists to submit pitches for our Spring 2022 issue of Root & STEM magazine focusing on space. We are pleased to collaborate with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) on this issue, and the accompanying podcast, that explores space through diverse stories, lesson plans, and activities.

Published by Pinnguaq Association, Root & STEM is a free print and online STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) resource to support K–12 educators in teaching digital skills. Each issue features articles, activities, and lesson plans with a specific focus on STEAM education through creative play and responsible stewardship.

Working with experts from the CSA and academic and industry leaders, the issue will aim to explore the following topics:

  • Indigenous Elders and knowledge keepers from different Nations speaking of star stories and the moon calendar
  • Innovations from Canada in space
  • Stories that highlight Canadian contributors to space including engineers, astronauts, and behind-the-scenes heroes
  • Innovations in research and development as it relates to the moon
  • Community showcase on innovative work and research related to space and the moon

Covering these topics, we are seeking proposals for:

  • A 2,500 word feature
  • A two-page comic for youth on space (copy and illustration)
  • Various 600 word articles exploring space and the moon
  • Cover art for the space issue

Pinnguaq pays $1 CDN per word for articles, and a negotiable page rate for illustrated work.

If you are interested in pitching us a story, comic, or cover idea for Root & STEM’s upcoming space issue, please email Pinnguaq’s Director of Education, Jennie Cross at jennie@pinnguaq.com by September 30, 2021.
