The Pinnguaq Association, in partnership with the Moore family, is pleased to announce that three Nunavut residents have been awarded the 2023 Danielle Moore Scholarship, and will each receive $2,000 in financial support towards their ongoing education. The winners are:
- Derek Aullaannaaq Qimuksiraaq Irwin-Van Eindhoven of Rankin Inlet
- Pamela Tannis Emingak of Cambridge Bay
- Kyra Kilabuk of Iqaluit
The Scholarship, which is available exclusively to Nunavummiut, assists recipients with ongoing formal and informal education and skills development, and is offered in memory of Danielle Moore, who taught at Pinnguaq’s Iqaluit Makerspace. Danielle was traveling to Kenya to represent Canada at the United Nations Environment Assembly aboard flight ET302 when it crashed in Ethiopia.
“All of this year’s applicants spoke to the importance of using the knowledge they gain to educate and inspire others. Danielle would have loved that,” says Ryan Oliver, Founder & CEO of Pinnguaq. “In her scholarship application, Kyra said something that truly resonated for me – she said ‘Although I did not know Danielle, I know that this scholarship will continuously help Nunavummiut grow and succeed and if she was still around she would be proud and ecstatic to see the impact she has and is making’ – I sincerely hope and believe that Kyra is right.”
This year’s scholarship recipients are all second-year students, chosen by the Moore family and Pinnguaq from a pool of 49 applicants – an almost 350% increase from last year.
Derek Aullaannaaq Qimuksiraaq Irwin-Van Eindhoven of Rankin Inlet is a 2nd year Environmental Technology Program student at Nunavut Arctic College. His passion for technology as a means of environmental protection and stewardship aligns directly with Danielle’s passions.
Pamela Tannis Emingak of Cambridge Bay is a 2nd year Nunavut Teachers Education Program student at Nunavut Arctic College. Her passion for teaching students about their place in history and their potential for the future would have inspired Danielle.
Kyra Kilabuk of Iqaluit is a 2nd year Bachelor of Science in Nursing student at Nunavut Arctic College. Her drive to help others – as a nurse, but also as an inspiration to other Inuit – reflects Danielle’s commitment to helping others.
“Choosing three recipients from such a large pool of truly inspiring applicants wasn’t easy, but these three scholars inspired us all, with both their dedication to education, and their commitment to using that education to uplift and strengthen their communities,” said Oliver. “I can’t wait to see what they achieve”.
