The Pinnguaq Association, in partnership with the Moore family, is pleased to announce that four Nunavummiut have been awarded the Danielle Moore Scholarship, and will each receive $3,000 in financial support towards their ongoing education. The winners are:
- Haily Arnaqjuaq of Sanirajak
- Candy Ivalutanar of Naujaat
- Aura Kwon of Iqaluit
- Kara Campbell of Iqaluit
The Scholarship, which is available exclusively to Nunavummiut, assists recipients with ongoing formal and informal education and skills development, and is offered in memory of Danielle Moore, who taught at Pinnguaq’s Iqaluit Makerspace. Danielle was traveling to Kenya to represent Canada at the United Nations Environment Assembly aboard flight ET302 when it crashed in Ethiopia.
“This being the third year we have run this scholarship we had more response than ever before,” says Ryan Oliver, Founder & CEO of Pinnguaq. “We are so delighted that Danielle’s impact continues to carry on across the territory through this scholarship.
Pinnguaq has partnered with the Moore family to provide funding to maintain the Scholarship for at least ten years, and is in talks with potential partners to expand not just the longevity, but also the scope of the Scholarship.
“These four recipients are at varying stages in their education but all share an interest in STEAM and a passion for improving the lives of their fellow Nunavummiut,” says Oliver. “Danielle’s mom Clariss, her dad Chris and her brother David once again joined me in reviewing all eligible applicants as we undertook the difficult task of choosing the Scholarship winners. This year, like the previous years, there were many worthy applicants we received, and once again the number of winners has increased.”
Haily Arnaqjuaq of Sanirajak is completing their first year of an Indigenous STEM program at Lakehead University.
Candy Ivalutanar of Naujaat is in their third year of the Nunavut Teacher Education Program at Nunavut Arctic College.
Aura Kwon of Iqaluit is in their first year of studies at University of Toronto pursuing their Bachelor of Music, with a focus on Music Education. After completing their Bachelor of Music, Kwon intends to pursue a Bachelor of Education and become a teacher in Nunavut.
Kara Campbell of Iqaluit is in their second year at Dalhousie University, pursuing their Bachelor of Science (Agriculture) in Undeclared Pre-Vet.
