Makerspace Lead and STEAM Educator

Wage: $50,000 Annual + Benefits
Full Time:  37.5 hours per week

What does success look like at Pinnguaq?

  • Engaging with thousands of young learners and adults across the country through the delivery of community-centred workshops.
  • Designing and deploying interactive experiences, online learning modules, and maker kits to teach STEAM fundamentals to all ages.
  • Publishing the nationally-recognized Root & STEM magazine, create a space to explore diverse voices and stories in STEAM.
  • Operating makerspaces in Nunavut & Ontario providing hands-on access to tools, equipment, and training for inquisitive minds and makers.

As a Makerspace Lead and STEAM Educator, you will be responsible for coordinating and promoting activities and programming in Pinnguaq’s Lindsay Makerspace. You will also be involved in supporting the planning and delivery of  high-quality learning experiences primarily in our Lindsay, ON Makerspace and also in local communities. Being part of the delivery team is being the public face of the Pinnguaq Association and an ambassador of the work we do.

  • Developing and delivering high-quality, community-centred, play-based STEAM and digital skills programming for City of Kawartha Lake learners of all ages.
  • Creating a positive, inclusive, exciting space where learners gravitate toward becoming Pinnguaq SuperStars.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the coordination and promotion of activities and programming in Pinnguaq’s Lindsay Makerspace and surrounding communities
    • Coordinate the work of the Ontario Delivery team in planning and delivery of in-person, blended, and virtual STEAM-based and essential digital literacy skills learning experiences for youth and adult learners in Lindsay and the Kawarthas. 
    • Build and maintain partnerships with local community groups on behalf of Pinnguaq and the Makerspace
    • Lead the scheduling of Pinnguaq programming in the Makerspace and at partner locations in the community.
    • Work with delivery team members and Marketing to ensure timely creation and distribution of program/event information for promotion.
    • Create delivery event registration pages on related platforms as needed.
    • Record and input attendance and evaluation data for delivery events including pre-registered programs, in-person deliveries and live virtual deliveries. 
    • Capture delivery events through photos and videos, confirm photo release forms are signed off, share photos and videos on Pinnguaq’s internal Slack channel #successtories-and-shareables
    • Maintain teaching and tech equipment to facilitate program delivery in the Lindsay Makerspace.
    • Some travel will be required to various program locations across the Kawartha Lakes and adjacent municipalities.
  • Facilitate the planning and delivery of in-person, blended, and virtual STEAM-based and essential digital literacy skills learning experiences for youth and adult learners, in the Lindsay Makerspace and in the Kawartha Lakes and local adjacent communities.
    • Develop and deliver engaging, fun, age-appropriate, STEAM and digital skills learning experiences with real-world applications.
    • Mentor and guide Lindsay Makerspace staff in the development and delivery of programming.
    • Work collaboratively with the delivery and education team to develop learning resources, including activity plans, and slide decks, to ensure rich learning experiences.
    • Foster an environment wherein participants have the best learning experience and are challenged in a positive, growth-minded manner.
    • Represent the Pinnguaq Association in a respectful and sensitive manner.
  • Complete cross-departmental tasks as assigned that may include but are not limited to: online module/course content and curriculum development, asset creation, contribution to the Root & STEM publication, and support with feedback gathering, evaluation and reporting. 
  • Maintain current knowledge of trends, initiatives and best practices of Makerspaces. Assess trends, initiatives and best practices and support their integration in the Pinnguaq’s programs as appropriate. 
  • Participate in learning opportunities to use modern technology and teaching practices. 
  • Network with local community initiatives to exchange information, through public speaking, providing in-service training, attending conferences and symposiums.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Attributes and Qualifications

Equal consideration will be given to the non-academic skills and experiences of candidates.

  • Experience with media and technology and basic coding concepts is an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience with creating and posting content to Tiktok, Instagram, Facebook, etc. is an asset.
  • Comfortable learning new technology and digital tools. 
  • Experience and passion for developing and delivering fun and engaging learning experiences for children and youth.
  • Ability to work as a collaborative and flexible team player in a dynamic team environment.
  • Strong decision-making and problem solving skills. 
  • Ability to work in-person in the Lindsay Makerspace, as well as the ability to occasionally work independently and remotely.
  • Basic First Aid certification is an asset.
  • Valid G class driver’s licence, clean driving record, and ability to drive a Sprinter-style van are assets.
  • A Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS) will be a condition of the employment offer.

 VSS Checks must be submitted prior to beginning work. Pinnguaq will pay for VSS.
