Call it an evolution, a rebranding, or a glow up, but there are exciting changes happening, and it is starting with our name.
You may have known us for years as Pinnguaq, or you might be discovering us for the first time. Now, we’re excited to introduce you to Lichen.
When we started in 2012 in Pangnirtung, Nunavut, Pinnguaq, the Inuktitut word for play, was the right name for us, reflecting our focus on teaching through play.
For almost a decade, we have evolved as an organization. We began our journey through digital play, and with the support of rural, remote, and Indigenous community partners, we have grown to design digital solutions and facilitate digital skills learning for children, youth, adults and educators.
But why Lichen?
Because lichen are amazing. They can thrive almost anywhere. They exist in a living partnership with their surroundings, contributing to a healthy ecosystem. They make the world around them better. We even spoke to one of Canada’s leading experts on lichen to learn more about these fascinating organisms!
That is what we strive to do, and so we have chosen this new name:
- To continue making a positive impact through culturally-representative STEAM learning experiences;
- To continue providing opportunities for individuals of all ages to grow, learn, and contribute to their communities;
- To continue showcasing the many faces of STEAM innovation;
- To continue lifting others up as the best collaborator, supporter, and partner that we can be.
